Phuket's Marina Market At Risk

Category: Tourism, Posted:18 Apr 2011 | 06:00 am

Phuket's marina's are bursting at the seams and unless the local government allows an open door policy for new projects the sector looks set to travel to other nearby provinces.
One key indicator is the buzz created by Krabi's 250 berth Port Takola which is set to open in two years.
Existing facilities here include Yacht Haven, Royal Phuket Marina, Boat Lagoon, Ao Po Grand and the public marina in Chalong.
Environmental lobbyists were successful in stopping a marina development in Cape Yamu and caused a large public outcry on a proposal at Koh Lon.
While Jumeirah Private Island's luxury development was able to be vetted with government approvals, the project has been suspended due to financial difficulties.
If Phuket does not roll out the welcome mat for well thought out sustainable initiatives for it's marine industry it will continue to see new players move to other locations.
