Airport Authority Earmarks Phuket Airport Expansion
Thailand's Airport Authority (AOT) has approved a THB 5.79 billion expansion program for Phuket International Airport slated to start by the end of 2010.Works will include a new international passenger terminal, improvements to the existing passenger handling terminal and improved infrastructure including additional taxiways.
Phuket remains the second highest volume airport in Thailand after Suvarnabhumi with over five and a half million passengers in 2008. the next expansion program is targeting to increase handling capacity within 4 years to over 12 million passengers. AOT is currently looking at the feasibility of the addition of a dedicated terminal for private aircraft which could be done on a BTO (build transfer and operate) scheme.
