Hilton Arcadia Karon to Host Asean Summit

Category: Tourism, Posted:04 May 2009 | 10:09 am

The results are in and Karon's Hilton will play host to the rescheduled Asean Summit in June, though the exact dates remain tentative. It was understood that Laguna Phuket with its Sheraton Grande and the Hilton Arcadia Resort were short listed to host the event, though in the end, the later was chosen.
Security has been a key issue for both the Thai Government and those foreign diplomats attending the event, and the Army will be providing security. A 5 km. buffer zone has been set which is most likely why the Hilton has been the preferred venue due to its substantial perimeter zone and ability to isolate the property. After the 'red shirt' protests in Pattaya which saw a breakdown in police protection for the event, the army will now be mobilized to ensure no repeats are experienced.
Phuket looks set to take center stage with this event which has both locals and those in the central government keeping their fingers cross that there will be no disruptions by anti government protestors.
