Koh Samui Waits For Upgrade Status

Category: Tourism, Posted:11 Feb 2011 | 06:00 am

Leading Thai resort destination Koh Samui is anticipating movement this year in the battle to obtain some measure of political and administrative self sufficiency.
Currently falling into the basket of the mainland's Surat Thani province the island has continued to lag in the development of an adequate infrastructure to cope with the growth of tourism and cavalcade of new hotel rooms.
While obtaining city status is the end game, an interim step would be the creation of a special district in order to accelerate growth.
In the meantime the recent spate of flooding and impact to the island's overloaded transportation and electrical supply crippled hotels; again highlighting the need for localized solutions to the island's growing pains.
