Maldives Government Orders All Resort Spas Shut

Category: Hotels, Posted:03 Jan 2012 | 08:41 am

In what is starting to look like the Great Spa Crisis of 2012, luxury pampering and religious values are making strange bedfellows in the Maldives.
A government order has closed resortspas across the tiny tourism dependent nation.
Conservative Islamic groups have pressured the Tourism Ministry into what is being termed a harsh and potentially damaging decision.
The action which was aimed at addressing prostitution ended up being a shotgun order that covers the entire hotel sector with spa, massage and even beauty treatments now banned.
New updates have the government 'rethinking' the order after widespread international media coverage and protests from hotel owners.
Resort destinations around the world have considerable envy over the Maldives given its sky high average room rates, strong demand and high capture rate for food and beverage spend.
Local observers note that liquor may be the next contentious issue coming to what appears to be a politically motivated situation.
