Sir Tony. Mentor. Or Tormentor?

Category: Tourism, Posted:31 Aug 2013 | 06:27 am

Dawn breaks in the naked city – Jakarta and I've already been up for hours.
I'm not exactly an Apprentice traveler but Tony Fernandes and Jakarta traffic have held me prisoner in this teeming urban nightmare for one day too long.
My thoughts are edging towards some rather disturbing conclusions. I so have some solace, in the lukewarm Grande Latte from Starbucks nestled up close to my leg, like a faithful dog.
Not to fliers, you actually can transport Latte through security checks in Jakarta but only as long as you carry it through and don't put it into one of those clumsy letterbox trays. This is the sign of an enlightened society. Perhaps. Or more likely just some slackers on dawn patrol.
Winding back to yesterday, as I was bogged down in bumper-to-bumper gridlock for hours and arriving at my AirAsia flight to be told I was ten minutes late and as the smiling check in counter clerk said "bad luck."
No amount of pleading could get me on, begging yes I'm not too proud to say I begged, nearly breaking into tears at one point. By this being a low-cost carrier there was no plan b, no alternative, no assistance to find other flights.
I found myself alone. As we all are, at birth, death and when you travel AirAsia. It's the trifecta of life.
Today, crawling out of bed at 4:45 am I'm back on the road. All latte'd up. Yes, it will be a grueling trip. Hours to burn at Changi in transit but there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a chance of actually leaving Jakarta.
Tony, oh Tony, it's just you and me. As usual.
