Thai Island Takes On Garbage Problem

Category: , Posted:20 Jun 2012 | 18:53 pm

Thailand's Koh Samet island is tackling the growing problem of garbage head on.
As both tourism and a growing population hit home, new initiatives are being put in place by local businesses and even industrial giant PTT.
Rather the converting the onslaught of waste to landfill, the aim is to convert degradable water to fertilizer.
A recent news piece in the Nation said that PTT had assisted the effort funding a fertilizer factory using biodegradable plastic.
Ultimately the proposition makes sense as the end product be can sold on for farming.
One of the biggest challenges though is the segregation of waste, as non-degradable items are incinerated.
Clearly Phuket is not the only island facing rising pollution and garbage concerns but Koh Samet has provided a worthy example of chipping away at the rising tide.
