The InterContinential Group has remained the world's number one group in terms of hotel rooms with over 600,000 according to MKG Hospitality's recently released 2009 ranking. IHG's brands include the core InterCon, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and the recently launched Indigo brand.
Following the list in order is Wyndham Worldwide, Marriott International, Hilton, ACCOR, Choice, Best Western, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Carlson Hospitality and rounded out by Global Hyatt. The fastest growing chain on the list was Hilton with an increase of 9.3%.
Many of the brands mentioned are centric to the US lodging market and offer franchising which is not commonly practiced in Asia, with full management being preferred by the chain. Many analysts in the industry are expecting brand consolidation and some merges or acquisitions with firms who are publicly listed seeing a free fall in stock prices over the next 12-24 months.
