BALI PROTEST Tune Hotels Controversy
Fast growing limited service chain Tune hotels have become embroiled in a growing controversy back of calls by local government and businesses claiming unfair competition against local properties and environmental infractions. At the core of the dispute are the local Melati class hotels who view the brands claims of '5 star beds at 1 star prices as detrimental.
Indonesia's Government rating system classes 'Melati' as budget accommodation which does not fall into the star rating perimeters. These properties are ranked from one up to three based on a criteria of services and facilities. Locally owned hotels are fueling the dispute and have registered complaints with the IHRA (Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association).
A second issue has been over a single property in Kuta which has seen locals alleging water has been contaminated by oil from a Tune Hotels infrastructure plant.
