Phuket Update. The Russians Are Going

Category: Hotels, Posted:27 Mar 2020 | 11:49 am

A constant of the COVID-19 tourism crisis in Phuket has been the support of Russian travelers to the island. In many cases, they have been the last tourism market standing.

All that is set to change with Russia implementing a ban on international regularly scheduled and charter flights as of today 27thMarch.

Snowbirds (European and Scandinavians) are a core legacy market for Phuket tourism, as they come in winter months year in, and year out.

One positive is that post SAR’s and also the tsunami, these brand loyal markets to Phuket and quickly returned the following season. Good news for Q4.

On the flip side, the Russian aviation issue has created more pressure on island hotels as numbers are flattening and the April and May outlook presenting is extremely challenged.

Come Q4 later this year, at least the tables will return and then the Russians will again be coming (back).
