PLASTIC BAG UPDATE Why 7-Eleven Won't Participate
I read with interest the First Person column in this week's Phuket Gazette by Suwit Kingkaew, Senior VP of the CP Group who manage and franchise the 7-Eleven brand in Thailand. Mr. Kingkaew expressed the view that the company provided bags which were sunlight-degradable material and it was not necessary to add further expense to customers.
Adding that currently CP are working in an initiative to provide biodegradable plastic bags and were investing substantial fund in the project. With regards to a surcharge the point came up that customers would no doubt ask where the money was going and that this could be a legal challenge back of consumer protection laws.
It's important to know and understand the varying viewpoints on this important issue and as time goes on, hopefully the initiative goes from unofficial to become Government legislation. At the same time a healthy debate is clearly beneficial as it helps bring attention to one of the islands important problems.
